Let’s face it, as a nation we’re all going to be stuck at home sooner rather than later, but that doesn’t mean we need to compromise our home security or our sanity. Whether you’re working from home, sheltering in place, on temporary leave, or even on lockdown, here are a few tips to help keep you safe and make the most of all the time were spending at home.
Lock Your Doors
Yes, you are home, you’ll hear/see/smell anyone that’s coming to your door during the day, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t keep your doors locked. You never know who’s going to show up, or when they’ll arrive, so you’re better off keeping them waiting, then letting them surprise you. Maybe it’s just a nosy neighbor or your in-laws letting themselves into your home, or maybe it’s someone or something more nefarious. Either way, getting in the habit of locking your door keeps them out and lets you make the decision on who can and can’t enter your home during the day.
Not looking to add yet another task to your already busy day? Many Kwikset electronic locks have an auto-lock feature to automatically lock the door after it has been closed for a period of time. Kwikset smart locks also allow you to control how long the lock waits before throwing the deadbolt.
Know Your Neighbors
Community watch programs are in place for a reason, they work. Knowing your local community, and keeping an eye out for suspicious activity, is an effective way to reduce crime rates and improve safety in your neighborhood. Now, we don’t want to advocate for overrunning your local sheriff station with calls about the U-Haul moving someone in down the street, but we do want to encourage you to contact your neighbors if something isn’t right at their home. No more than ever is a great time to connect on social media, via phone or text, or even to use a neighborhood app like NextDoor Being a good neighbor creates a community that cares for each other, and we need that now more than ever!
Clean Up
Every day. Sometimes the hardest thing about being stuck in the same place for an extended period of time is the stuff that starts to build up around you. Dishes from breakfast, lunch, and dinner, kid’s toys, office supplies, pet products; it’s never-ending! Cleaning up regularly can help save your sanity if you ever find yourself stuck at home for weeks on end. Additionally, a clean home is a healthy home!

Get Some Fresh Air
Weather permitting, you need to get some fresh air or go outside. So open up that window, step out on that balcony, or head out for a walk. This is especially true if you’re sick! When you’re cooped up inside all day you keep breathing the same stale air, chock full of all the stuff you’ve been breathing out. So take a minute and take a breath, it’s good for you!
Get Smart, Locks That Is
For even more peace of mind, and to know who’s coming in and out at all times, pick up a smart lock for any of the doors that you and your family regularly use to access your home. With custom codes and lock histories, you can see exactly who’s coming in and out and when. Plus, if you ever need to remotely lock or unlock your door, you’re all set!
