Kwikset’s SmartKey door lock is designed to alleviate the stress and costs that result from having to re-key a door lock. SmartKey’s advanced design provides maximum security while requiring minimal time and skill. It sounds simple because it is! To feed your curiosity, here’s an in-depth look at how the Kwikset SmartKey actually works.
SmartKey re-key technology stands out as the paramount leader in key control security because of the following enhancements:
- Optimal Drill Resistance: The lock cylinder uses two steel balls in the front of the key face, making it resistant to attack from drilling or intruders.
- ANSI Grading: The ANSI Grade 1 deadbolt is certified as the highest level of residential security and is found in SmartKey.
- BumpGuard™ Protection: Patented technology with a side-locking bar substitutes a traditional pin and tumble design, ensuring protection against lock bumping.
- Superior Pick-Resistance: SmartKey locks have passed even the most stringent lock-picking standard, UL 437, par. 11.6.
What does this mean? SmartKey is bump-proof, pick-resistant, and drill-resistant.
HOW TO USE
Re-keying SmartKey locks requires only three items and entails three easy steps. Users must have their functioning key, a SmartKey Learn Tool, and a new Kwikset key. First, insert the functioning key and turn it ¼-turn clockwise. Then, insert and remove the SmartKey learn tool. Follow by removing the functioning key, inserting a new key, and turning it ½-turn counter-clockwise. Your lock is then successfully re-keyed.
As with anything, glitches may arise if proper implementation is not carefully executed. If you run into difficulty re-keying your SmartKey lock, these troubleshooting tips serve as helpful work-arounds:
- Keep in mind that both the key and learn tool must be fully inserted for the process to properly work; only turn the functioning key ¼ turn.
- Not inserting the key all of the way will delay and possibly detriment the re-keying process; users must insert the key in all of the way to re-key. If the key is not inserted in all the way, the lock could jam and neither the old key nor the new key will work. If this occurs, take the lockset to your local Home Depot or Lowe’s to have it reset.
- Even if users have lost their learn tool for their SmartKey lock, intruders won’t be able to break in. Both the learn tool and the working key are imperative to successfully re-key a lock.
“I rent a home to seasonal guests in Naples, Florida. I like to be able to change the keys as easily as I change the alarm code,” says Mark S. “SmartKey allows me to do that with so much ease. I trust SmartKey so much that I have switched out all of the locks at my mother’s home for my peace of mind. SmartKey is the best innovation Kwikset has developed.”
SmartKey re-key technology delivers an unparalleled option in home security maintenance. Kwikset’s SmartKey is available at home centers and hardware stores nationwide. Find the nearest location here.
HOW DO I ENTER A SECURITY CODE
Thanks for sharing the scenario of re-keying the kwikset smart lock , i am a locksmith and it will be a great help for me to know such tricks for re keying.
I have to re-key 2 locks. I get the first part with the original key and tool. My question: What do you use for the NEW key?
HELP!! I tried to re-key my lock now neither key works! How do I fix this???
You need to have the smart key cylinder reset from the inside which requires you to take it to home depot, lowes or a locksmith
You can get new keys at ace hardware, home depot or a locksmith
There is no security code for a mechanical lock
I got the keys (8 keys for around $10.00) at Lowe’s and used original tool that came with locks! EASY! PEASY! These are great! When a tenant moves – just get new K-Key set and re-key instead of buying and installing all new locks! Much more economical in the long run too!!!!
What prevents an intruder from using their OWN learn tool . . . and simply reset the lock to one of their keys . . .and thereby, easily break in?
Are the learn tools universal, or are they paired to a particular lock?
You can use literally ANY existing key cut from a KW1 (Kwikset Standard) blank as the new key. If you dont have any laying around from old deadbolts or such, ask a locksmith if they have any miscuts (ones they cut as copies for other customers but they didnt work) laying around that you could have.
The “programming” key is universal. But you need to put the lock in programming position (3 o’clock) with the WORKING key before you can insert the programming key. There is no way to reprogram the lock to a new key without turning the cylinder (as in with a working key). While I suppose if one could pick it they could get it into the programming position (they are bump proof and you can’t pick it with a snap gun like pin tumbler cylinders), once they have the cylinder turned, it makes no sense to actually program It to a new key unless you want to be a d ick and lock the person out too.
I re-keyed my deadbolt on my smart Lock with the keypad and everything, instantly, but when I tried to re-key the knob lock on my door to the garage it would not work. Now neither key works in the garage lock, which should have been the simple one. I would appreciate some help figuring this out.
You will need to contact a locksmith to take out the cylinder and key it up manually with a reset tool. Not the tiny slit in the front but the tines in the back of the cylinder by taking it out of the the cylinder housing. It might be cheaper to purchase a new lock with a working key and then reset it to your new key.
Thank you!
Your welcome, keep them lubricated, they are very picky locks. I bet there are videos on YouTube about rekeying those locks without a key to give you a visual.
